Top Ten Tuesday; Liked Characters in Non-popular YA

Top Ten Tuesday was started way back in June 2010 by The Broke and The Bookish because of a love of lists and books. In January 2018 it was taken over by That Artsy Reader Girl. Jana assigns each Tuesday a different topic for discussion, she has a scheduled lists of topics on her blog, which you will find here.

Characters I liked that were in Non-favourite/ Disliked Books.

This topic was a tricky one! Usually books I don’t like are disliked due to their characters. I’m a character lover not a plot lover. So a book with a bad plot but good characters is still rated as an average book, whereas a book with an okay plot but bad characters is never an enjoyable read. So I’ve given this topic a little twist and I’ve changed it to:

Characters I like in non-popular YA books.

Books that are seen as not popular or mostly disliked by the bookish community. Let’s get started.

1 & 2. Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. She is one of my all time favourite heroines, also Peeta, I loved his character in the book. In the film Peeta was slightly disappointing, sorry Josh Hutcherson.

The Hunger Games novels available here.

3 & 4. Tris & Four, I love Dystopian novels, I have read the whole Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth and was *spoiler* thoroughly disappointed with that ending, what the hell?! But as general characters I really enjoyed reading about Tris & Four, although the Divegent series is probably a series I’ll only ever read once.

The Divergent series is available here.

5. Jacob Black from The Twilight saga by Stephanie Meyer. I admit myself that this series has major flaws and can be cringy as hell, but Jacob was the love of my life in my younger teenage years. He’s witty, doesn’t take himself too serious and is very caring and protective. I dislike the other characters as much as the next reader, sparkly vampire, ugh. But I’ll always be Team Jacob!

The Twilight Saga is available here.

6 & 7. Dimitri & Rose from The Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. I have read and reread this series so many times, I’ve officially lost count. I will never tire of reading about Rose & Dimitri’s love for each other. Just don’t mention that horrific film that I will never watch for fear of it tainting my obsession!

The Vampire Academy series is available here.

8 & 9. Grace & Sam from The Wolves of Mercy Falls series by Maggie Stiefvater. Another sappy, meant to be together romance with HUGE flaws but I love it. You’ll soon discover that I am obsessed with cringy, predictable love stories, they are my guilty pleasure. This one in particular has wolves, and I love wolves (Team Jacob, remember?) so I was destined to fall in love with this series.

The Wolves of Mercy Falls available here.

10. Cole from Sinner, a standalone follow up novel to The Mercy Falls series. Another clingy YA trope I’m bound to fall for is your typical bad boy who turns good for a girl, awful I know! I disgust myself sometimes. So Cole is your typical bad boy, nobody likes him, he moves to California, meets a girl.. continue with the predictable story, BUT Cole is a guy who can transform into a wolf, plot twist! Heart eyes emoji.

Sinner is available here.

And that is the end of my list of 10 characters that I like from non-popular/disliked books. Let me know if you like any of these characters in the comments, or if you are totally and utterly disgusted with my choices!

Bookishly yours,

  1. You must be in a different part of the bookish community to me. I know most people didn’t Allegiant, but most people I see loved the first two. Same goes for The Hunger Games!
Im totally with you on VA, I have read it so may times and I think I am going to pick it up again soon ❤

    1. Any time someone mentions disliked books I’ve seen all of these mentioned but definitely some like Twilight more than others. Yayyy either people have never heard of VA or they hate it. Happy to meet someone who loves it as much as me!
