I love verse novels! One of the first verse novels I read was The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo and I’ve been reading as many as I can find ever since. I recently read Girl and the Goddess by Nikita Gill and it is now a new favourite of mine. If you’re unsure if verse novels are for you or just wish to know more about them, I recommend checking out Anniek’s post; A Quick Guide to Verse Novels which inspired this post.
I want to promote verse novels as much as possible and hopefully find readers who have yet to try verse novels or who want to read more of them. However buying books isn’t always an option for everyone so to make this post accessible to as many of you as possible, I’ll be sharing eight verse novels that you can potentially read for free on Scribd!
I’ve been using Scribd for almost a year now and I couldn’t imagine my life without it, I depend on Scribd for majority of the audiobooks I listen to every month. When I signed up to Scribd I was very lucky to use a link that offered a two month’s free subscription, I can now offer you all my referral link which will give you 60 days of free access to Scribd! You can cancel at any time even before the first payment is due and just enjoy the 60 free days. Read for free on Scribd! In return Scribd will provide me with a free month of Scribd.
Below are eight verse novels on Scribd that I have read or are on my TBR, however as I’m in the UK that might affect whether or not these are available in your country or not.
- The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo
- Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga
- Blood Moon by Lucy Cuthew
- Gloves Off by Louise Reid
- All Along You Were Blooming by Morgan Harper Nichols
- Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam
- The Truth Project by Dante Medema
- The Crossover by Kwame Alexander
These eight verse novels are just a small selection of the amazing diverse and LGBTQ+ books available to read and listen to on Scribd.

Blood Moon by Lucy Cuthew was one of my favourite books of 2020. Just phenomenal. I am currently reading Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough but it’s pretty dark.
Fab post!

I’m dying to read Acevedo’s books and I’ve heard that her audiobooks are amazing! So far I’ve only listened to the audiobooks for The Raven Cycle (and really enjoyed them) and I’d love to listen to more. Thanks for the recs!

Yess she narrates them herself so they’re brilliant! I hope you enjoy them when you do read them 😊

The first novel in verse that I ever read was Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse, and I reread it sometimes. I’ve read and loved both The Poet X and Punching the Air. I don’t really listen to audiobooks, they don’t work for me.

I find audiobooks an amazing reading experience so to me it would be a shame to miss out but audiobooks aren’t for every one 😊
